Equine-Assisted Learning

Equine-Assisted Learning (EAL) is an experiential learning experience in which horses are used as active participants to facilitate the learning experience for the human participants. By interacting with horses, a better understanding of what is more effective in our own human relationships can be achieved.

EAL combines our knowledge of equine behavior with our understanding of human behavior, organizational and managerial behavior, and adult learning theories.  EAL uses a team approach, brining together an equine specialist, trained facilitator, and horses.  Through collaborative and experiential approaches, participants use their experience, reflection, and application to facilitated learning, growth, and understanding of themselves and others.

Why Use Horses?

Horses act as mirrors for human behavior, emotions, and thought processes.  They have exceptional abilities to reflect human emotions and feelings.  Horses do not lie or over think a person’s emotions.  They recognize inconsistencies between a human’s behavior and emotion, telling the true human story.  Horses’ sensitivity to non-verbal cues gives them an amazing ability to read people’s emotional state, thereby offering observable and physical feedback to a trained specialist.  As social animals, horses also provide valuable insight into group dynamics and roles.

Including horses as an integral part of learning activities is an especially powerful method of team building, problem solving, leadership development, communication enhancement, relationship building, and self-authenticity.

How EAL Can Help

EAL helps participants to better understand themselves and others by engaging in activities with horses.  Participants discuss their thoughts, behaviors, and patterns experienced during the session with the horses.  Discussion bridges the activities with horses to “real life,” thereby inviting participants to reflect, generalize, and apply new insights to their every day life.  EAL helps participants become better team players, develop problem-solving skills, improve them leadership abilities, communicate more effectively, build healthier relationships, and enhance self-authenticity.

Hope-thru-Horses, Inc. will develop a customized learning program for your group aimed at helping you reach your goals and desired outcomes.
